I think its 78, Mayawati had only put up dalits in the dalit rserved seats, most other seats where fielded with brahmins, thakurs etc and the dalits in these areas voted for them along with their candidates castes. So a kshtriya candidate fielded by her pulled in his base and the BSP's dalits votes, so if two blocks(out of 4 for e.g, the other being yadavs and muslims) vote 20% each its hard to lose since you get something like 40% of the vote.

Rhytha

Its not simple as that as one can see from some of the results posted by Mudy above. Behenji was not the only one who fielded Brahmins. Others did too. What is unique about Mayawati was that she courted Brahmins BECAUSE THEY ARE BRAHMINS. Brahmins accepted it and voted as a block. Will this work for other elections ? Hard to say. Perhaps it worked this time because of several factors like Yadav supremacy in UP and the OBC quota issue. I dont know.

If this block can be solidified the implications of this are huge. When I say solidified I mean this vote has to be assured of voting one way like the muslims, no matter what. And it has to assure the parties that it will come out in droves and vote for the parties that they have reached a consensus on. Once that happens a lot of interesting possibilities open up. Can it be solidified ? Or is this a flash in the pan ? Hard to say, but we will see..

Election of Ansari, a known terrorist, murdererer, modern-day-Gazi - who did not allow Ramlila and Vijaya Dashami and Diwali celebrations in the Mau town, is significant. He is the same guy who over last 5 years has "cleared" the Mau district of all Hindutva-leaders - at least 22 Hindutva leaders have been murdered by him in the last 5 years.

The whole contest of Mau signifies how the election was polarized. Here is the detailed result:

MUKHTAR ANSARI Independent 70226 46.78
VIJAY PRATAP Bahujan Samaj Party 63208 42.1
BINOD Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party 3712 2.47

PRVEEN YADAV Independent 2967 1.98
MUNNI LAL Independent 2308 1.54
BRIJESH Independent 927 0.62
SITA RAI Janata Dal (United) 895 0.6
RAJKUMAR Janvadi Party(Socialist) 602 0.4
VIJAYI RAM Indian Justice Party 586 0.39
RAMU Jai Samaj Bharatiya Samaj Party 543 0.36
KRIPA Independent 335 0.22
HARINDAR Bahujan Uday Manch 293 0.2
UMESH Independent 248 0.17
RAMNARAYAN Bharatiya Republican Paksha 199 0.13
Total Valid Votes 150131 100.00
Lead Margin 7018

1. Samajwadi Party had not fielded anyone in Mau, in favour of Ansari. It would have been of course too embarrassing to field him on SP ticket, therefore the back-door support. This shows their attitude to Islamists.

2. BJP and Gorakhmath had withdrawn their candidate in favour of Vijay Pratap of BSP.

3. Not one other Muslim contestant, in opposition to Ansari!!! Complete Islamic support!

So it was a direct fight between Islamist supported by SP Vs BSP candidate supported by Hindus. SP-backed islamo-terrorist won. JD, Communists, Congress etc only helped him win.

Here is an old report about the deeds of Ansari and his brother.

I think the results of UP may not be good for UP economy, but is good for Hinduism in general.

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->  Dalit-Brahmin formula

Ms. Mayawati's answer to this is her by-now famous Dalit-Brahmin formula. Fortuitously for her, Dalits and Brahmins are in sizeable numbers through the region. The BSP plan was evident in the supremo's high-energy rally in Sultanpur. A riveting qawali (musical chorus) on the theme of caste harmony kept the crowds engaged through the five hours they waited for the BSP leader. In an enchanting mixture of awdhi and bhojpuri, the qawals, by turn sang paeans to sarvajan (all social groups) unity. Qawali over, little Saurav Misra reeled off names of Brahmins who had clambered on to the BSP bandwagon; he himself was one of them, he said proudly.

When Ms. Mayawati arrived, it was to frenzied shouts of "Behen Mayawati zindabad; sarva samaj zindabad (hail Mayawati, hail all social groups.) And with the audience standing on its feet clapping, she unveiled her new slogan: "Haathi nahi Ganesh hai; Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh hai (it is not elephant but Ganesh; it is Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh)."

The BSP chief did not once utter the word manuwad. The emphasis instead was on sarvajan. People accused the BSP of narrow-mindedness but its choice of candidates proved how utterly wrong they were, she said, reading from the party list: 139 candidates from the forward castes, among them 86 Brahmins, up from 37 in 2002. Ms. Mayawati asked to know if any other party had done even half as much for the forward castes. Indeed, in Rae Bareli, she threw a sharp taunt at the Congress. The Congress was supposedly a party of Brahmins: "But consider the irony. The party has not fielded a single Brahmin candidate in this entire region."

The BSP feels the Congress' neglect of Brahmins in this region will work to its advantage. And the man implementing the BSP project is Satish Chandra Misra. The party general secretary and the brain behind its Brahmin jodo abhiyan, Mr. Misra has been heli-hopping across the State, seeking Brahmin votes for the BSP. For Brahmins brought up to view the BSP with suspicion, Mr. Misra's high-profile presence in the party is a huge reassurance. That he has a helicopter all to himself is a talking point in the Brahmin-dominated villages of Amethi and Rae Bareli. Brahmins here acknowledge their close bond with the Gandhi parivar, yet say they feel let down by the Congress. Coming at such a time, the BSP attention is naturally welcome, and Mr. Misra has cashed in on this by flying more than once into the Amethi-Rae Bareli belt.

Aware of the damage this can do to the Congress, the family has been harping on unity. At her rallies, Ms. Vadra tells voters not to be swayed by caste feelings. "We got freedom because Gandhiji united us. Your future lies in remaining united behind the Congress." The family's strength is its pan-Indian appeal. Yet the Gandhi magic has thus far worked only in the Lok Sabha elections. If the Gandhis can change the pattern, they will have pulled off a coup.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteBegin-->QUOTE<!--QuoteEBegin-->The importance of Satish Misra for Mayawati

By IANS
Wednesday April 4, 12:49 PM

Lucknow, April 4 (IANS) Thirty months back, when he first got the offer to join the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Satish Misra was apprehensive. Was there any future for someone from an apolitical Brahmin family in a party of Dalits?

From being a political nobody, the very corporate-looking Misra has now emerged as a potent 'Brahmin force' in BSP, which is now trying to do a Congress. For four long decades, the Congress banked on the Brahmin-Dalit-Muslim axis that it built and carefully nurtured.

'The Brahmin-Dalit combine disintegrated in the Congress for the simple reason that the Congress used Dalits as a vote bank,' points out Misra.

'Unlike the Congress, we in BSP chose to establish a complete social integration between the two communities,' he adds.

Though it is known that the 55-year-old lawyer-turned-politician and son of a high court chief justice was the key architect of this social engineering, the low profile Misra attributes the success story entirely to BSP chief Mayawati.

And Mayawati took advantage of the vacuum created on account of the Congress going into virtual political limbo.

Once the task of wooing the Brahmin to BSP was entrusted to Misra, he left no stone unturned to carry it out with a missionary zeal, sacrificing his legal practice that had made him the highest income-tax paying attorney in Lucknow.

And if he is being envied today for being the only star campaigner for the party besides Mayawati, it is sure enough on account of his merit and perseverance.

'It was no surprise that Behenji (Mayawati) has given him an independent helicopter to go about campaigning in the Brahmin dominated areas of the state. After all he has proved his mettle by mobilizing Brahmins in a big way for BSP,' remarked a Muslim leader in the party.

By Misra's own account, he had addressed as many as 98 Brahmin 'sammelans' (meetings) in the state.

'Within eight months of my induction into the party as its national general secretary in October 2004, I organized the first Brahman sammelan at Allahabad in February 2005. It was there that the party's new slogan - 'Haathi nahin Ganesh hai, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh hai!' (This is not just an elephant, but the party icon symbolizes the Hindu Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv!)

The slogan caught on - like wildfire.

'I addressed 21 such meetings in different places and concluded the first round of this series with a 'maha-sammelan' (mass rally) in Lucknow on June 9, 2005,' Misra recalled.

His next move was to travel to each of Uttar Pradesh's 70 districts where he constituted a 'Brahmin-Dalit Bhaichara Banao Samiti' (Brahmin-Dalit Goodwill Committee).

'Each of these committees has 300 Brahmins and 100 Dalits who met periodically to discuss mutual social problems and also thrash out solutions.'

At the end of one year in June 2006, Misra organised a state level meeting of the goodwill committees in Lucknow. That was promptly followed by a series of 77 rallies in different parts of the state between July and September.

He covered about 21,000 km within the state over these three months, busy breaking the caste barrier in a highly hierarchical Uttar Pradesh society.

Misra took pains to make his audience realize and understand that Brahmin was never the exploiter of the have-not Dalit.

'In traditional Hindu society the Brahmin survived only on 'bhiksha' (alms) while the Thakur and Yadav remained the powerful landowner who exploited the poor Dalit at will,' was the oft-repeated refrain of Misra to his audience.

As far as possible, he would make it a point to have Brahmins to traverse the distance to the nearest Dalit pocket for the goodwill rally.

'And that really worked to repose confidence among Dalits that this bond was here to stay,' asserts Misra, who believes that 'the success of the Uttar Pradesh experiment would go a long way in eventually re-writing the political destiny of India'.

28 May, 2005 l 0215 hrs ISTlManjari Mishra/TIMES NEWS NETWORK

LUCKNOW: The unabashed serenading of Bramhins by Mayawati in her latest pro-Manuwadi avatar has evidently perked up some sagging spirits. The vicious diatribe against the 'Tilakdharis' obviously condoned, a "traditional vedic welcome" awaits the BSP supremo when she presides over the grand finale of the 'Brahmin' conference slated for June 9.

An equally generous Behanji is expected to respond to the good turn by a barrage of pleasant surprises meant for her new protege. These, according to the party sources "could range from sops to a definite Pundit quota (possibly 80 to 100 seats) in party tickets for next election". But officially, for now, mum is the word.

Asked to disclose the proposed gifts Mayawati has in store, Satish Mishra, her trusted lieutenant and Rajya Sabha MP, says, "wait and watch." However, with experience of 26 such district-level sammelans under his belt, an upbeat Mishra is certain "that the aftermath of the Lucknow sammelan will change the course state politics."

The former advocate general claimed to be inundated by requests for organising sammelans pouring from every district practically. "In fact, we had to postpone five such events in Varanasi, Etawah, Farukhabad, Bara Banki and Fatehpur, in view of this mega event in June," he claimed while talking to TOI on Friday.

And money has never been a problem when it comes to BSP shows. The Lucknow event may cost a neat sum as preparations are afoot to give Ambedkar ground a huge canopy to shield the neo-converts from the scorching heat, sources confide. This time, however, the 'Bramhin Samaj' is more than willing to foot the bill.

Smiling away reports that the 'Samaj' had promised to contribute a hefty Rs 5 crore to Behanji's election kitty, Mishra said that the contributions were definitely coming from all quarters among the community. "It was so touching to see these five poor men who handed me over five hundred rupees, all crumpled and sodden, in Hapur the other day. The money, they said, was meant to be a token of thanks to Behanji who has long lost thought of the orphaned community," he confided.

Playing the role of saviours to the hilt, BSP workers have even begun the exercise of collecting reports on atrocities against Bramhins. "We have now authentic data with us," confirmed BSP MP Brijesh Pathak. "This will come in handy once Behanji rides back to power," he promptly added. Pathak also rattled off names of one top BJP leader and RSS pracharaks who he claimed, had pledged support to the 'Brahmin mission'.

So it is time for hosannas for the new messiahs as countdown to the mother of all sammelans begins. Not to be outdone, the 13.82 per cent influential vote bank gears up to wield its sacred thread with gusto.

New Delhi, May 11:  The BJP's poor showing in Uttar Pradesh has come as a huge blow to party chief Rajnath Singh, the architect of the saffron strategy for elections in his home state.

<b>Hours after the results crashed the BJP out of power race in Uttar Pradesh, senior party leader Murli Manohar Joshi blamed the reverses on the party's election management, which he said required a review at the national level.</b>

His comments virtually signalled the onset of the attack that Singh and former BJP chief M Venkaiah Naidu, who was overall in charge of the party's election management in Uttar Pradesh, could come under from their senior and junior colleagues.

Many in the BJP blame candidate selection for the debacle, citing renomination of almost all sitting MLAs.

They also attribute the debacle to having an alliance with the Apna Dal, a move that took out more than two dozen seats from the BJP's kitty.

<b>"The party took upper caste votes for granted and went on to woo backward sections. It failed miserably. Brahmins have been hugely neglected this time. As a result of which they came in support of the BSP," a senior party official said.</b>

The BJP, which has projected veteran leader Kalyan Singh, a Lodh, as its Chief Ministerial candidate, party sources said, gave inadequate weightage to him during campaign.

"It was height of mismanagement that the party released its manifesto in absence of its Chief Ministerial candidate," a BJP leader said.

<b>In an attempt to keep the Advani camp in good humour, Singh gave overall charge of election management in Uttar Pradesh to Naidu, whom he has been appointing head of almost all party committees over the past few months.</b>

"Now somebody will have to take responsibility from the Central leadership as the results are going to have an adverse impact on the party's prospects in the longer term," a BJP official said.

The BJP, which has launched a high-pitched Hindutva campaign, fell well short of retaining its present strength of 73 MLAs, excluding 15 who had already defected.

<b>"An impression gained ground in the general public that we have a tacit understanding with the Samajwadi Party. We were not able to rectify it and lost," another party functionary said.

Voters, he added, perceived the BJP as a party relying heavily on a ‘permutation and combination’ principle to win power.</b>

"This factor cost us dear. We have really been away from electoral politics in all practical terms."

Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the BJP's moderate face, addressed only one public meeting in Lucknow, that too in the fourth phase of the state elections.

He did not launch the saffron campaign in Kanpur, planned jointly with Apna Dal chief Sone Lal Patel and Kalyan Singh, once his critic.

<b>The BJP also did not utilise Modi, its Hindutva icon, for campaign extensively in Rajnath Singh's home state, where the party wooed voters on its ideological plank.

Election results in Uttar Pradesh also came as a setback for the RSS, which used its full strength to ensure the BJP is able to regain the lost ground.</b><!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Uma Bharati was quite vitriolic while announcing withdrawal of her candidates in favor of BJP. She had made it clear that she did it so that reality of BJP's strength will come out in the open, and people won't blame her for BJP's imminent loss.

Seems like she had a better grasp on the reality.

Even VHP continued to remain quite upset with BJP.

So, does that mean RSS' coming out in full force to support BJP was an experiment? I had assumed that to mean that all hindutva forces were fully united behind BJP, but now I have my doubts. Were these elections meant to decide within the RSS parivar whether BJP still represented hindus at large?

Uma Bharati and VHP have been trying to have a new hindu political outfit with RSS' blessings. It seems likely that such voices will become shriller.

It seems that BJP took upper caste votes for granted just as it has been taking hindutva votes for granted. Same old story of losing the "dhruva" for the "adhruva".

Vajpayee is almost retired. And a poor performance in an election managed by Advani's protege Naidu puts another dent in Advani's already dented image.

BJP is surely going to see some turmoil.

Uma Bharati and VHP have a stronger case now.

VHP and Uma Bharti groups etc should join forces with BSP and create Hindu Vote bank and let BJP have tactical understanding with this group.
My question to experts over here. Is this the begining of a new Hindu era, the ultimate nightmare of Commies, Pusedos and Islamists and evangelists ?
Just the fact that there can be another Hindu alternative to BJP's short , narrow vision is very good news : The best being the initiative of greter Hindu Samaj coming from the so called Dalit segament of our society. Over all good omen for bright future.

Nidhi Sharma | New Delhi
106 roadshows with less than 10 seats to show; party tally, vote share fall further
When Rahul Gandhi started his roadshows with long-time family confidant Satish Sharma, to campaign for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared that he was the "future of the State". But the people who turned up for his darshan did not think so and, not swayed by his sermons, they voted for other parties.

Call it mismanagement at the organisational level or a complete lack of political wisdom, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family just could not work his magic. As soon as the results of the Congress' dismal performance in the UP election started pouring in early on Friday, senior party leaders scrambled to save Rahul Gandhi from the obvious embarrassment and even went to the extent of lauding his efforts.

Union Minister Kapil Sibal said, "Rahul will lead the party in Uttar Pradesh in the 2009 Lok Sabha election." Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, "Rahul Gandhi led from the front. He has improved and strengthened our position in the State." The party went into damage control mode offering excuses like lack of party organisation at the grassroots.

<b>The final statistics reveal a rather grim picture. Rahul Gandhi held 106 roadshows in different constituencies all over the State. But according to the party's statistics, the Congress could win less than 10 seats covered by these roadshows</b>. This triggered a debate in political circles on whether sister Priyanka Vadra was a better party campaigner.

<b>While the Congress had a no-show in almost all the constituencies where Rahul campaigned, the party claimed four of five seats in Rae Bareilly district and two of five in Amethi - the traditional Gandhi family pocketborough where Priyanka had campaigned</b>.

A senior leader said, "The comparison is unfair because Priyanka campaigned only in areas considered the family's strongholds whereas Rahul did it on a wider scale everywhere." The party also brushed aside these comparisons. Singhvi said: "This conclusion is completely misplaced."

Following the party's performance in UP, the decision to field Rahul as the star campaigner has divided the Congress. Before the elections, the party had claimed that Rahul would help in increasing the Congress' vote share. However, even this could not happen. Senior leaders like Salman Khurshid and AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot are understood to have opposed such massive campaigning by Rahul. According to party sources, these leaders were of the view that if Rahul campaigned on such a large scale he would have to shoulder the blame for the Congress' defeat. Rahul's close advisors, who strongly argued that UP was the ideal launchpad for him, are now likely to bear the brunt of the defeat.

The party's inability to retain, leave alone improve on, its seat tally has obviously triggered doubts about its campaigning strategy. Party leaders pointed out that Rahul's experiment with the "corporate culture" did not go down well with the party functionaries in the State. Rather than involving the grassroot workers, leaders point out, Rahul brought in data analysts to gauge the political mood in the State just two months before the elections.

A senior leader pointed out:<b> "There was a serious disconnect in the functioning. The party worker cannot work with analysts and NGOs who do surveys and feed in data in computers. So they did not feel a part of the entire election and campaigning process." </b>

According to party insiders,<b> Rahul relied more on computer-wielding analysts than the party workers, which finally did him in</b>. Even the issues that were raked by him did not strike a chord with the electorate.

By 2009 GE, people will vote them out and may bring back something else. She is in majority which is good, atleast she can run government for 5 years, unless and until there is a split.

Mayawati's success in gathering a chunk of Muslim votes, despite her denouncement of the Muslim's fundamentalist leadership, is an eye-opener for the political pundits. The major gain she made in Muslim-dominated Rohelkhand is a pointer to the Muslim support to the BSPO. Clearly,<b> the Muslims voted on tactical lines in pockets to keep the BJP in check, once they realised the upper case were also voting for her and the BSP was the best suited to prevent the rise of the BJP. </b>

When she begun to make overtures to the Brahmins a year ago, people took her new politics with a pinch of salt. But she was willing to take a calculated risk to win. In this the SP, the BJP and the Congress have miserably failed as they were touching just the fading caste and communal aspirations, not the real aspirations of the citizens.

Another sign of hindutva disunity under a veneer of unity.

Why Yogi is the one smiling
PIYUSH SRIVASTAVA
Posted online: Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 0000 hrs

LUCKNOW, MAY 11 : <b>The shock that the BJP found itself in was in complete contrast to the upbeat mood of its Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath and his camp. What makes the defeat more painful for the saffron party is that while its state President Kesri Nath Tripathi lost from Allahabad East, his bete-noire Yogi’s kitty of winning candidates swelled from one in 2002 to seven this time. Yogi had handpicked 14 party contestants in eastern UP.

Out of the seven winners, six belong to the Hindu Yuva Wahini (HYW) and the Hindu Mahasabha, two organisations with Yogi as the patron. His candidates won from Gorakhpur Sadar, Maniram, Tulsipur, Ramkola, Hata, Naurangia and Farenda in Gorakhpur, Kushinagar and Maharajganj districts.</b>

Although there were nine BJP MLAs from eastern UP in 2002 compared to seven this time, there was only Radha Mohan Das Agrawal from Gorakhpur Sadar who belonged to Yogi’s Hindu Mahasabha. Agrawal has been re-elected.

<b>An elated Yogi told The Indian Express that only he could save these seven seats and added, “The state leadership had in fact dug its grave by dumping the Hindutva agenda and promoting cronyism and indiscipline. I tried every means to keep this (Hindutva) issue alive. And you can see that despite a wave in favour of the BSP, we have won seven seats in the region.”</b>

When pointed out that BJP candidates for whom he had campaigned extensively lost in Deoria, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar and Basti, Yogi blamed it on the state leadership and said, “Despite all my efforts, the BJP didn’t change its candidates in these four districts. I could force the state leadership to field my chosen candidates only in Gorakhpur, Kushinagar and Maharajganj and you can see how well my candidates have done.”

<b>Yogi said he would have been a saviour for the BJP had party leaders realised his merit in time.

“In fact, I had a list of 42 candidates, which the party did not accept. I am sure the BJP would have won 25 seats in eastern UP had it heeded to my advice,” Yogi added. </b>

BJP lost upper caste votes or low % of voting. What was Arun Jaitley role? BJP should retire Naidu and Advani.
In Punjab, high voting means middle class brought more votes for BJP.
In UP, low voting means, middle class stayed at home.
