It was BJP which claimed (pretended), at the time of its growth, to be for the Hindu cause and interest. Remember the 1991 election that saw BJP reach its zenith and make governments on its own first time in the big states of India including UP? That was when BJP AVOWED to stand for the Ram Janma Bhumi issue, on which they now play with words.
Had AdvaniJi not taken up the emotive Hindu issue at that time, BJP would be still looking at 80-85 seats today.

Kolkata, March 27 (IANS) He is a former die-hard Marxist now in a saffron garb. Former Rajya Sabha member Bratin Sengupta, who switched his loyalties to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), champions the cause of the majority community and says the BJP has been wrongly portrayed as 'communal'.
Sengupta, previously a firebrand student leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), was sent to the Rajya Sabha by the Marxist party. But he joined the BJP and has been nominated by it to contest the Lok Sabha elections from West Bengal's Barasat constituency in North 24-Parganas district.
'The Congress and CPI-M have always tried to present the BJP as a communal party to motivate people against us. But the truth is, <b>our party is a secular one</b>... we neither have bias towards a particular community nor believe in provoking communal tension,' Sengupta said at a press conference here Friday.

Sengupta asserted it is not possible to overlook the interests of the majority community.

Any news report or TV reporting, they just talk about Hindutava when they are talking about BJP, no dicussion on BJP stands on National security, foreign policy or fight against terrorism or economy. UP outfit leader had offered Rs 25 crore for Bushâs head
Congress might have termed Varun Gandhiâs inflammatory speeches in Pilibhit as violent and communal, but on Thursday the party saw nothing wrong in aligning with a radical Muslim outfit, Ittehad-e-Millat Council in Uttar Pradesh whose president had announced a reward of Rs 25 crore on former US President George Bushâs head.
Ittehad-e-Millat Council will support Congress in the parliamentary elections and the parties would have a seat-sharing arrangement in the State Assembly election slated for 2012. The parties will also have joint campaigning for parliamentary elections.
Ittehad-e-Millat Council president M Tauqeer Raza Khan kicked up a controversy in 2006 when he announced a reward of Rs 25 crore to anyone who got him the head of Bush. Raza was provoked over publication of âobjectionableâ cartoon of Prophet Mohammed by a Danish artist. The cartoon had angered Muslims all across the world. Khan had blamed Bush for protecting and encouraging people like the Danish cartoonist and appealed to every Muslim to contribute Re 1 for the award. Bush, who is considered a great friend of India by Congress-led UPA Government, was in India at that time.
As Congress general secretary in-charge of UP Digvijay Singh announced the alliance with Ittehad-e-Millat Council at party headquarters here on Thursday, he faced a barrage of questions on whether Congress supported the Muslim outfitâs ideology. At first, Singh tried to brush these remarks under the carpet by claiming that these were not made by Khan. However, Khan himself agreed that he had made those remarks at that time.
The Congress was red-faced as it claimed that it had not extensively vetted Ittehad-e-Millat Councilâs background. Digvijay Singh tried to save face by saying: âThey have extended support to us. But we donât subscribe to those views.â
When asked how it could join hands with an outfit which has been propagating violence when Congress has been criticising Varun Gandhi for giving such inflammatory speeches, Singh said: âWhat views were expressed by Ittehad-e-Millat Councilâs president were before he joined hands with Congress. Under no condition do we subscribe to any ideology or any thought which is communal in nature or which propagates violence.â
Singh tried to play down the issue by feigning ignorance to Razaâs controversial remarks which occupied media front pages for days. âFrankly, I didnât know. Fanatic religious fundamentalism is something we have always opposed. Pilibhit : A police case was filed Sunday against Varun Gandhi and two other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for the violence outside the jail here Saturday when the party candidate from Pilibhit was arrested. District authorities, meanwhile, said the BJP leaders had provoked party workers to indulge in violence.
Cases were filed against Varun Gandhi, senior leader Kalraj Mishra and former legislator B.K. Gupta in the Kotwali police station of Pilibhit, which is around 350 km from here.
"While Varun Gandhi has been booked under Section 144 (unlawful assembly), Mishra and Gupta have been booked under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code," Superintendent of Police Prakash D. told reporters.
Pilibhit district magistrate Ajay Chauhan, in a report sent to the Uttar Pradesh government, said that the three leaders provoked the workers who then took the law in their hands on their insistence," a home department source told IANS.
The police action came in retaliation only to control the agitating mob, the report added.
A Pilibhit court sent Varun Gandhi to jail until Monday for allegedly making hate speeches amid clashes between party workers and the police Saturday. The court ruling came shortly after the BJP candidate from Pilibhit said he was "ready to go to jail" over the reported anti-Muslim speeches that he denies having made.
Hundreds of BJP supporters followed the police vehicle in which Varun Gandhi was taken away from the court. A few of them were seen clinging to the vehicle and climbing onto its bonnet, making it difficult for the policemen to drive.
The police then opened fire after lobbing tear gas shells and resorting to cane charge, injuring three people.
Varun Gandhi courted controversy after his speeches, that had derogatory references to Muslims, gained media attention. Gandhi maintains that the speeches, whose recorded copies were aired repeatedly on television, were doctored.
The Election Commission came down heavily on him and suggested that he should not be fielded as a candidate in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP refused to do that and questioned the Election Commission's jurisdiction to suggest that.
On Friday, Varun Gandhi withdrew his bail application from the Delhi High Court and decided to surrender.
Due to security reasons, Varun Gandhi has been kept in a separate cell but besides homemade food, no additional facilities are being provided to him, Jail Superintendent Mukesh Arora told IANS Sunday.
Around 50 BJP workers were also arrested here Saturday after they blocked roads and clashed with the police while waiting for Gandhi. They were charged with unlawful assembly.

BJP Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi has been charged with attempt to murder, rioting and other offences in an FIR filed in connection with violence that erupted here even as police on Sunday maintained a close vigil to maintain law and order in this district.
29-year-old Varun, along with Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Kalraj Mishra, local MLA Sukhlal and former party MLA B K Gupta, have been named in another FIR registered for violation of prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC on Saturday when the BJP candidate courted arrest in a case related to his alleged anti-Muslim speeches, Kotwali police sources said.
Varun, who is in judicial custody, has been booked under sections 147, 148 and 149 (rioting and related charges), 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 336 (doing any act that endangers human life or the personal safety of others) and certain sections of IPC and public safety and certain state acts for the violence around the district jail in Pilibhit, they said.
The FIR relating to rioting and other chages has been filed by Pilibhit district jailor Mukesh Arora against Varun and his supporters after BJP activists fought a pitched battle with the police and laid a siege of the jail premises.
Meanwhile, Pilibhit District Magistrate Ashok Chauhan discounted the allegation of BJP MP and Varun's mother Maneka Gandhi that a Muslim officer had injured several of supporters and said he was not deployed there.
Chauhan said ,"I strictly don't agree with the comments of Maneka Gandhi. The person she is naming was not at all deployed at that place.
"We checked the records and we were careful about his deployment. He was at another place and the allegation is totally false," he said.
On the situation in Pilibhit, he said, "it is under control. People may be spreading rumours but as of now the situation in the city and rural areas is totally under control".
In Lucknow, Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal, said, "A close vigil is being maintained in Pilibhit with deployment of adequate number of personnel from Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and police".
Asked about the cases registered against Gandhi, who courted in Pilibhit on Saturday, he just said, "A case under section 188 of IPC has been registered against all those who violated the prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC".
During the violence on Saturday, BJP workers, who were demanding Varun's release, had indulged in heavy brick batting and laid a siege of the district jail.
Maneka Gandhi told NDTV that the police officer, whom she charged with having injured several BJP supporters, was "definitely there".
"He was definitely there, there has been written testimony. These people who have testified have nothing against him. They are all very poor people, most of them are illiterate," she said.
She alleged that the party's supporters, who were in the hospital, have got bullet wounds. "What are we to believe? Should I believe a bullet wound or should I believe somebody who says there was no firing? <b>Maneka Gandhi, sitting MP from Pilibhit who visited the jail and met her son, lent a communal touch by alleging that 45 people were injured in police firing including many by a Muslim police inspector.</b>
âWe had been monitoring one police inspector in general. His name is Pervez Mia and he alone was responsible for injuring more than 25 percons,â Maneka Gandhi said.
Earlier, a non-bailable warrant was issued against Varun in Barkhada on March 5. After the Allahabad High Court dismissed his plea for quashing criminal proceedings against him, the young leader decided to surrender in the court on Saturday.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Vipin Kumar sent him to judicial custody till March 30 when his bail application will be heard. Both Varun and the Investigating Officer (IO) have been asked to submit relevant papers on that date.
âIf my arrest helps to boost the morale of the people, I am ready to go to jail for it,â said Varun on the Court premises minutes before his judicial custody was ordered.
He said, âI am being framed in fake cases by my political rivals and have full faith on judiciary. I stand by my commitments and I am ready to fight to any extent.â He said his aim was to protect the people of Uttar Pradesh and the whole country and he would take all steps to do so within the ambit of law. âI have never done anything wrong for which I should feel guiltyââ, he asserted.
Soon after the court direction, Varun announced that he would go to jail on foot along with his supporters but the administration decided to take him in a police vehicle.
The milling crowd gheraoed the police gypsy that was carrying Varun to jail. The jeep inched through the crowd as some of the supporters squatted on the road preventing the jeepâs movement. The situation took an ugly turn when supporters laid seige to the district jail demanding that they should also be arrested. Some even tried to scale the jail wall to enter it. When tear gas shells and warning shots failed to deter supporters, the police fired rubber bullets in which three persons were injured.
âThe situation is tense but under control. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital. All of them declared safe,â Ajay Chauhan, a senior district official, told the Sunday Pioneer.
Earlier, the BJP workers had a field day even in the presence of large contingent of security forces and under the strict monitoring of the Election Commission. All the entry points to the district headquarter were sealed. Police barricades were erected with an attempt to prevent Varun Gandhi from entering Pilibhit. As the affidavits are prepared, Gandhi is sitting alone on a chair. Is he overwhelmed by his circumstance? "Yes," he replies. If you could unravel it all, would you? "If I could, I would undo it all," he says. "I have been brought up in a very different environment. I would undo it because I don't want 250 million people (Muslims) to think I am basing my career options on opposing or vilifying them."
Why haven't you said this to the media in your earlier statements? "Nobody has asked me. I stand by the things I said in my speech, but I was reacting to a local situation. I was not voicing my views about a community in general."
Is he riding a wave? "I have not stepped out of my house for eight days. I have not gone from studio to studio giving interviews. Does that look like someone riding a wave? I've been deeply hurt by all of this."
