It is too big, too well networked to collapse overnight. Besides, its position in Kerala is in a sense quite comfortable. Maybe if West Bengalâs electoral history had followed the same trajectory, CPM would not be undergoing its present trauma in the State. Proving the adage, âabsolute power corrupts absolutelyâ, the CPM in Bengal is headed in the direction of deposed Communist regimes in Russia and Eastern Europe, while in Kerala it may well stage a comeback in 2016 after its inevitable rout in 2011. But Bengalâs politics is poised for a tectonic shift. In fact, the subterranean plates are moving already; earthquakes are piling upon earthquakes. The choice before the party is stark. Either it recasts itself as a modern, democratic, loosely structured organisation like other mainstream parties, or sticks to dogma with rigidity, awaiting eventual oblivion.
