General layout differences between Bauddha stupa, North Indian temple-style and South-Indian temple style:
While Southern temples have a cap-stone on top, Stupas usually have Chhatra or umbrella, and North-Indian temples have Kalasha/Amalaka.
Also for Main dome/Chaitya, Stupas usually have hemisperical hollow, Southern temples usually are in shape of a Rath or Vimana, while North Indian classical temples usually have a Shikhar or mountain-like structure.
