Mumbai churches land in land scams
QUOTEMumbai: One of the biggest landowners in Mumbai is the Church of North India. But now this land is at the heart of a controversy.
While the church trust maintains that the land has to be redeveloped in order to take care of the churches that sit on them, the parishioners are not convinced.
Afghan Church in Colaba owns land of 109,000 sq ft, All Saints church in Malabar Hill owns 27,000 sq ft and St Peter's church in Mazgaon owns 120,000 sq ft â all bearing the promise of thousands of square feet of attached land.
...................
âTrust property worth crore has been misappropriated and the money realised has not been spent in line with the objectives of the trust.â
"Allotment of flats under the redevelopment scheme done to outsiders instead of beneficiaries. "
"Provident fund of the teachers withheld to the tune of Rs 7.24 lakh, while, trustees spent Rs 7.29 lakh for its board meetings from 1999-2003. "
"Over Rs 92 lakh spent as legal fees to settle trustee disputes."
âAnd nearly a crore was spent in legal fees just to resolve petty differences between BDTA and its various factions.â
BDTA refutes all such allegations and insists that parishioners should stick to prayers.
......
The battle for gaining a foothold on this real estate goldmine is so fierce that even the top priests have started taking sides of the various factions. And why not â when it comes to properties worth crore of rupees, spiritual matters can always take a backseat
