Infiltration attempts from Pakistan and ceasefire violations have been on the rise in recent months with such incidents happening at regular intervals.



Firing was going on intermittently from the Pakistan side and troops guarding the border have retaliated, the officer said.



The reports also said two mortars were fired from Pakistan, which exploded away from the border post.



"There was no casualty on our side in the firing from across the border", the officer said.



It appears that the firing is aimed at giving cover to infiltrating militants, he said, adding that the troops along the border are alert and vigilant to foil any fresh infiltration bids.

The cross border firing started around 0200 hours even as a group of militants entered the Ulfa Machail border outpost along the International Border and were challenged by a BSF patrolling party, a senior BSF officer said.

The firing between forces from across the border and BSF continued till 0500 hours, he said.

Quote:Gurdaspur (Punjab): Two policemen and two militants were killed in a fierce gun battle early Sunday near the India-Pakistan international border in Punjab's Gurdaspur district, police said.



Punjab police officials said that both militants were gunned down after a police team patrolling the border belt in the Bhamial sector spotted them in the early hours of the morning.



"Two Punjab police personnel were killed and one injured in the gun battle," a police official said here.



The identity of the killed militants is being established, officials said.



The shootout took place near Norat Jaimal Singh area of Gurdaspur. The area is close to Punjab's border with Jammu and Kashmir.



Police and security agencies have launched a search operation in the area to see if any more militants are hiding there, officials said.



The Bhamial sector is the same area where rockets were fired from the Pakistan side and over 10 metres of the barbed wire fencing inside Indian territory was blown up near the international border April 19.



The Border Security Force (BSF), which mans the 553-km long barbed wire fenced border between India and Pakistan in Punjab, retaliated with light and medium weapons. Between 800-900 rounds of ammunition were fired then.

The Indian Army sees it as a "clear case of ceasefire violation", the spokesperson added.

There were no Indian casualties so far while the casualties, if any, on the Pakistani side were not immediately known.



Pakistan has opened fire in Krishna Ghati sector for the fourth time this month. Earlier, it had indulged in firing on May 1, 6 and 18.

BSF jawans guarding the BOP and patrolling party took positions and retaliated, resulting in exchange of small arms fire, he said, adding it continued for nearly one-and-half hour intermittently and resumed again at 06.15 hours and was continuing intermittently since then.



"There was also an explosion tiggered by IED near the border line. There was no lose of life or injury to anyone in the explosion and firing on this side of the border," he said.

It was not immediately known whether the explosion was carried out by any intruding militant or anybody else, he said.



Massive search operation has been launched in the area, the official said, adding further details would be known latter.



Yesterday, Pakistani troops helped violated the seven-year-old ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) yet again, firing at Indian positions at Machhil sector in Jammu and Kashmir killing two porters and injuring two jawans.



The firing comes just four days ahead of Home Minister P Chidambaram's visit to Pakistan.

There have been many ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops this year.

Pakistani troops had last violated the ceasefire on June 21 when they fired at a forward outpost along the International Border (IB) in Jammu where the BSF foiled an infiltration bid by militants.

Suspected militants had planted three IEDs along the LoC near Kangri post in Bagialdhara belt of Poonch district,they said, adding one of the IEDs exploded last evening.

Pakistani troops fired mortar shells at two Indian posts in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district in an attempt to provide cover fire to a group of infiltrators, army sources said here Sunday.



"There was heavy mortar shell firing from across the Line of Control in Jhallas sector late last (Saturday) night. The Indian posts of Kirpan and Kranti were targeted. However, there was no loss of life on the Indian side," an army source said.



[color="#FF0000"]The Pakistani troops opened fire on the Indian forward pickets to divert attention and push in infiltrators,[/color] the source added.



Poonch is about 240 km from here.
